Starting Lineup

Ledesma · Ávila · Ovando · Coronel · Sández · Ibarra · Rodríguez · Pizarro · Di María · Ruben · Campaz

Rosario Central looks to hit teams on the break with a vertical style of play, using a 5-2-3 formation to catch opponents out of position. This lineup aims to defend in a compact low block before launching rapid attacks through wide areas. The goal is to soak up pressure and then exploit the space left behind the opposition defense as soon as the ball is won.

Ledesma sits between the posts to organize the back five. Ibarra holds the center as the main defensive anchor, while Ovando and Ávila act as the wider center backs to cover the channels. Coronel operates as a right wing back to provide width and track back when needed, whereas Sández plays on the left to help defend the flank and push up the pitch. This defensive unit works to stay tight and force the opposition to play wide, making it difficult for them to find gaps between the lines.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide stability. Pizarro and Rodríguez sit in front of the back five to shield the defense and break up play. Pizarro works to intercept passes and win the second ball, while Rodríguez looks to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive line to the attackers. By sitting deep, these two ensure that the center of the pitch remains difficult to penetrate, allowing the team to regroup quickly if possession is lost.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. Campaz and Di María act as wide wingers, with Di María known for his exceptional passing range and ability to cut inside to create chances. Campaz stays wide to pull defenders out of position and whip crosses into the box. Ruben acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and play with his back to goal to bring the wingers into the game. The forwards press the opposition back line to force errors and win the ball high up the pitch.

Rosario Central gains a massive advantage through the speed of transition when moving from defense to attack. The combination of wide wing backs like Coronel and Sández creates wide overloads that can overwhelm a back four. Another strength is the ability to stay compact when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to find space in the central areas.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to frustrate dominant teams by denying them space in the final third. It is most effective when playing against opponents that push their full backs very high up the pitch.
