Atlético aims to be defensively solid and direct, relying on a 4-4-2 formation. The team works to stay compact and hits the opposition hard when they win the ball. This lineup focuses on winning the second ball and quickly moving the ball from the back to the strikers to punish any gaps in the opposition defense.

Jan Oblak acts as the last line of defense, providing a reliable presence in goal. In front of him, the back line operates as a flat back four. Pubill and Hancko form the central pairing, with Pubill acting as a ball playing defender while Hancko focuses on being dominant in the air. Grimaldo plays as an attacking full back on the left, often looking to overlap and provide width, while Llorente works as a more balanced defender on the right who can also carry the ball forward. The unit stays narrow to force opponents wide and protect the middle.

The midfield works in a four man block to control the central areas. Hjuland sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Barrios plays next to him to win the second ball and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. On the left, Lookman acts as an inverted eight, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Kang in Lee operates on the right to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This midfield group works to squeeze the space between the lines and ensure the team remains difficult to break down.

Atlético uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Vlahovic acts as a pressing centre-forward who works to pin the last defender, while Gyokeres plays as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines. They often attack in combinations, using quick passes to move through the thirds. The duo is designed to make runs in behind and use their physicality to hold up the ball, allowing the midfielders to join the attack. When the ball is wide, they look to attack the near post or make movements to receive on the half-turn.

A major strength of this Atlético formation is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when Lookman and Kang in Lee can quickly move the ball to the front two. By using the full width of the pitch through Grimaldo, the team can stretch the defense and create one on one situations for the wingers.
