Starting Lineup

Acuña · Otamendi (Rivero) · M. Quarta (Ramirez) · Montiel · Beltran · Correa · Driussi / Freitas · Almada · Andrada · Moreno · Beltrán

River aims to dominate through high pressing and verticality using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the pitch and overwhelm opponents in the final third. The goal is to win it back high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle into a defensive block.

Beltrán sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four where Montiel acts as an attacking full back to provide width on the right. Acuña works similarly on the left side, often pushing high to support the wingers. In the center, Otamendi uses his aerial strength and experience to command the area, while M. Quarta acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. They tend to hold a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield functions as a double pivot designed to provide stability. Andrada and Moreno operate in the central zones to shield the defense and recycle possession. Moreno works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Andrada looks to win the second ball and carry the ball forward into the half spaces. This pairing must be disciplined to avoid being bypassed when the full backs push up. They are the engine that allows the front four to stay high.

The attacking unit is very aggressive with three attackers across the front and a second striker in the hole. Correa and Almada act as wide wingers who cut inside to create overloads in the middle. Beltran and Driussi / Freitas operate as a central partnership, with one often acting as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations. They look to hit in behind on the transition and use quick combinations to break the lines.

River offers massive verticality and the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. By pushing Montiel and Acuña high, the team creates numerical superiority in the attacking half. The intense pressing from the four forwards can also force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the central defenders to win the header and start a new attack.

This 4-2-4 formation relies on high energy to maintain a heavy press and quick transitions. It is best suited for matches where River needs to break down a team that sits deep in a low block.
