Starting Lineup

Acuña (Ortega) · Otamendi (Rivero) · Ramirez (M. Quarta) · Montiel · Beltran · Correa · Driussi / Freitas · Almada · Andrada · Moreno · Beltrán

River aims to play a vertical style of football through a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup focuses on immediate pressure and quick transitions to catch the opposition off guard. The goal is to stretch the pitch and create scoring opportunities through heavy numbers in the final third.

Beltrán operates between the posts to organize the defensive line. A flat back four provides the foundation, with Montiel acting as an attacking full back on the right to provide width. Acuña plays as an attacking full back on the left, looking to overlap and cross. In the center, Otamendi acts as a ball playing defender who can step up to engage attackers, while Ramirez provides cover and uses his aerial strength to defend crosses. The unit must hold a high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact.

The midfield works as a double pivot to provide balance to the high attacking numbers. Andrada and Moreno act as the engines in the middle, tasked with protecting the defensive line and winning the second ball. One midfielder must drop between the centre backs to receive when playing out from the back, while the other drives forward with the ball to connect the defense to the attack. They must also track back quickly to prevent being bypassed by long balls.

River uses four attackers to pin the opposition back. Almada and Correa act as wide wingers who stay high and wide to stretch the defence. Almada prefers to cut inside to create chances, while Correa looks to find space in the channels. Beltran and Driussi / Freitas operate as a partnership in the center, with one acting as a target man to hold up the ball and the other making runs in behind. This front line is designed to press from the front and force a long ball from the opposition.

A major advantage of this River formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Montiel and Acuña push forward. The team can also win it back high up the pitch due to the aggressive positioning of the four forwards. This setup allows for quick transitions that catch the opponent in a disorganized state.

This 4-2-4 formation relies on high intensity to overwhelm the opponent in transition. It is best suited for games where River needs to break down a low block or exploit a high defensive line.
