PSV aims to dominate games through a high press and rapid vertical transitions using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to pin the opposition back and create constant threats across the pitch. Kovar stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four functions as a flat defensive unit where Dest operates as an attacking full back to provide width on the right. On the left, Mauro Júnior is tasked to overlap and support the wide men. In the center, Gasiorowski and Flamingo act as the primary defenders, with Gasiorowski often acting as a ball playing defender to start attacks. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a high line to support the forward press.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Veerman plays as a deep lying playmaker, using his passing range to switch play and find the forwards. Wanner acts as the carrier, driving forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must work hard to cover the space left behind the advancing full backs and ensure they do not get bypassed in transition. They are the engine that allows the team to transition from a mid block into a full attacking surge.

In the final third, PSV utilizes four attackers to overwhelm the opposition. Til and Pepi operate as a central partnership, with Til acting to find the feet of the striker and Pepi looking to run in behind the defence. The wide players, van Bommel and Man, act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. This movement creates space for the full backs to push up and allows the forwards to combine in tight spaces near the box. The front four are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

A major tactical advantage for PSV is the ability to create wide overloads through the combination of inverted wingers and overlapping full backs. The presence of two central strikers also allows the team to pin the last defender and win the second ball in the attacking third. This formation also provides the speed of transition needed to hit opponents on the break before they can settle.

This 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk, high reward system centered on heavy attacking pressure. It is best suited for matches where the opponent plays a low block and can be broken down through width and central combinations.
