VUŠKOVIĆ works to shield the back three, while GABRIEL looks to carry the ball forward to connect the lines. On the flanks, JAMES and BROWN provide the width in the middle third. JAMES occupies the right side to support the transition, whereas BROWN works to press from the front in the wide areas. This midfield unit must stay compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The attacking side of the formation relies on a lone striker, KOBEL, who must hold up the ball effectively. KOBEL acts as the focal point, working to pin the last defender and create space for others. Because there is only one striker, the team relies on the wing backs and wide midfielders to provide support during attacking phases. The goal is to use KOBEL to link up play with the advancing midfielders or to find space to run in behind once the team wins possession.

This formation offers great compactness when defending against teams that dominate possession. It allows the team to create wide overloads through the movement of LAMINE YAMAL and DIOMANDE when they join the attack.
