Ceni sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. A flat back four provides the foundation with Zambrotta at left back and Maicon at right back. Both Zambrotta and Maicon are expected to overlap the wingers to provide width. In the center, Zanetti and Richards act as the primary defenders. Zanetti provides cover while Richards works to win the second ball. This unit tries to hold a high line to squeeze the space and support the midfield.

The midfield operates with a three-man core to control the center of the pitch. Cambiasso sits in a deeper role to shield the defense and recycle possession. Snejider works as an inverted eight, driving forward with the ball to connect the lines. Di Natale plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box. The attacking unit uses three forwards to stretch the defense. Ronaldo Nazario acts as the central striker, using his explosive pace and dribbling to isolate defenders one on one. Vieri plays as a left winger who can cut inside to act as a second striker, while Rosicky operates on the right wing to deliver crosses. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. They use combinations in tight spaces to create runs in behind.
