This lineup focuses on squeezing the space in the opponent's half and using ball retention to move the opposition block out of position. By building play through short passes, the team aims to dominate the tempo and force mistakes high up the pitch.
The defensive unit starts with Raya or Meslier between the posts to play short from the back. A flat back four provides the foundation, with Saliba and Romero acting as the central pairing to defend zonally. Saliba and Romero use their strength to win the header and clear the lines when under pressure. On the flanks, Timber or White act as full backs to provide stability, while Calafiori or Hincapié can play as attacking wing backs to push higher. Gabriel and Mosquera provide cover to ensure the defensive line stays compact and keeps a high line to support the press.
In the middle of the pitch, Arsenal employs a three-man midfield with a single pivot to anchor the team. Zubimendi or Guimarães sits deep to deny the pivot and protect the back four. Ahead of them, Rice or Merino act as the left sided midfielders to press aggressively and win the second ball. Ødegaard, known for his exceptional passing range and ability to find space, operates as the right sided playmaker to create from deep. This midfield group works to connect the defense to the attack by recycling possession and picking up runners in the half spaces.
The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Saka and Madueke occupy the right wing to cut inside or provide width, while Yıldız or Martinelli operate on the left to attack the far post. Havertz, Gyökeres, or Tzolis lead the line as a central presence to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker. This front three works to press from the front, forcing a long ball from the opposition. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow for quick combinations to hit in behind on the transition.
Arsenal offers several tactical advantages through this setup. The team can create numerical superiority in midfield when the full backs push up to support the play. They also have the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build out from the back. This creates opportunities to win it back high up the pitch and catch the opposition out of position.
This 4-3-3 formation creates a heavy presence in both central and wide areas. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and rely on long balls to bypass the midfield.
