Starting Lineup

PSG aims to be defensively solid and relies on a compact mid-block, using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike when the opposition leaves space behind their back line. By sitting deep, the team makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines, forcing them to play wide or rely on long balls.

In front of Mr Dayo, the defensive unit operates as a narrow defensive block. Dominic acts as the central anchor, while Samson and Azeem provide cover as the two wide centre-backs. To protect the flanks, Promise operates as an attacking wing back on the right, while Stephen acts as an attacking wing back on the left. This back five can shift quickly to deny the turn to attackers or squeeze the space in the final third. The defenders are tasked with winning the second ball and making sure they clear the lines when under heavy pressure.

The midfield consists of a four man line designed to congest the center of the pitch. Jadama and Afeez work in the central areas to shield the defence and win the ball back high up the pitch when a trigger is pulled. Jadama helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Afeez can press aggressively to disrupt the opponent. On the flanks, Eric and Michael provide the width, with Eric acting as the right midfielder and Michael occupying the left. They are expected to track back to support the wing backs and ensure the team remains compact when out of possession.

PSG utilizes a lone striker in Peace to lead the line. Peace acts as a pressing centre-forward, tasked with pinning the last defender and forcing long balls. The attack is built through quick transitions where the wing backs, Stephen and Promise, can push forward to support the play. This creates opportunities for Peace to receive the ball and hold up the ball, allowing the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The goal is to isolate wide players in one on one situations or use the wingers to whip it in for a header.

One major advantage for PSG is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for teams to play through the middle. The formation also allows for wide overloads from overlapping full backs when the team moves from a defensive block into a counter attack. By using the wing backs to stretch the defence, the team can create space in the channels for the midfielders to exploit during a break.
