Starting Lineup

Calafiori · Timber · G. Magalhães · Saliba · Gyökeres · Havertz · B. Guimarães · Ødegaard · Rice · Zubimendi · Raya

Arsenal focuses on high pressing and heavy ball dominance using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win it back high up the pitch through aggressive positioning. The intention is to control the center and force the opposition into mistakes while playing out from the back with high confidence.

Raya acts as the lone man in goal, sweeping behind a very high line to catch long balls. The defensive unit relies on a staggered back two consisting of Saliba and G. Magalhães, who act as ball playing center backs. Saliba uses his recovery speed to cover space while G. Magalhães provides aerial strength and physical presence to defend zonally. Because the back line sits so far up, the defenders must constantly monitor runners and step up to set the offside trap.

The midfield is the engine of Arsenal, operating as a five man unit that creates immense central density. Calafiori sits as a left sided pivot to help build play from the back, while Timber functions as the right sided pivot to balance the unit. Rice works as a carrier in the left half space, driving forward with the ball to break the line, while B. Guimarães operates in the right half space to recycle possession. Havertz plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box to cause chaos. This five man group connects the defense to the attack by making constant short passes to move the opponent.

Up front, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender and stretch the defence. Zubimendi plays as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to create space for others, while Ødegaard operates on the right wing to deliver early crosses or find the feet of the striker. Gyökeres leads the line as a pressing centre forward, using his strength to hold up the ball and fight for second balls. This front three works to press from the front, forcing a long ball from the opposition.

A major tactical advantage for Arsenal is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. The formation also allows for wide overloads when the midfielders push high to support the wingers. By compressing the midfield, the team ensures they can quickly win the ball back and transition into attack with high intensity.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed to dominate possession and squeeze the life out of the opposition in their own half. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit in a low block and struggle to handle constant pressure.
