Safonov plays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense operates as a flat back four with Hakimi acting as an attacking full back on the right to provide width. On the left, Mendes pushes up to overlap the winger. In the center, Marquinhos operates as a ball playing defender who can step up to intercept passes, while Pacho covers the space behind him. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and maintain a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield utilizes a three-man midfield with a single pivot. Vitinha sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and recycle possession. Neves works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back and moving the ball through the thirds. Ruiz acts as an inverted eight who can drive forward with the ball and make late runs into the box to support the attack. This midfield unit focuses on winning the second ball and controlling the tempo of the game.
