Starting Lineup

FC Bayern focuses on heavy possession and high pressure using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the ball in the middle third and squeeze the opposition in their own half. Urbig acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very aggressive two man back line. Kim and Upamecano operate as the central defenders in a high line, where they must be ready to sweep behind the defense to catch runners. Because there are only two defenders, they often step up to intercept passes or act as ball playing defenders to start the build up. The unit functions by keeping a high line to reduce the space for the opponent to play.

The midfield is a dense block consisting of a five man unit that dominates the center. Laimer and Davies play as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Laimer providing grit while Davies covers the left channel. Kimmich and Pavlovic sit in the half spaces to control the tempo, with Kimmich using his passing range to progress through the thirds. Musiala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, where he can combine in tight spaces and drive forward with the ball to link the midfield to the attack.

In the final third, FC Bayern uses three attackers to stretch the defense. L. Díaz and Olise operate as wide wingers who cut inside to create more central presence, while Kane acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. The attack relies on Musiala making runs into the pockets to support Kane. This setup creates many opportunities for one on one situations on the flanks or quick combinations between the front three and the advancing midfielders.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to retain possession. The wide overloads created by the wingers and the advancing midfielders allow the team to pin the last defender and create space for late arrivals into the box. Additionally, the high press from the front three can win it back high up the pitch to catch the opposition in transition.
