Starting Lineup
BOUCHARD (86) · DEVILLIERS (77) · ALAOUI (80) · CHIKORE (81) · T. MOREL (80) · BOUSQUET (85) · CHABERT (86) · LACOSTE (85) · GIBERT (87) · GUY CISSÉ (85) · RÉMY (83)France focuses on a direct style of play through a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to strike quickly and use verticality to catch opponents off guard. By utilizing a strong central presence and wide options, France seeks to bypass the midfield and find the forwards as fast as possible.
BOUCHARD sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four to maintain compactness. ALAOUI and DEVILLIERS act as full backs to cover the wide areas, while T. MOREL and CHIKORE occupy the central defensive spots to defend zonally. CHIKORE and T. MOREL must hold the line and stay close together to deny runs in behind. The whole unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and protect the area in front of BOUCHARD.
The midfield is organized as a four man unit that connects the defense to the attack. BOUSQUET operates as a single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. To his sides, LACOSTE and CHABERT provide the engine to press in a mid-block and carry the ball forward. GIBERT plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This midfield group must work to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing out from the back.
Up front, France utilizes two forwards in a partnership. RÉMY and GUY CISSÉ work together to lead the press from the front and pin the last defender. The team uses the wide players to stretch the defence and then looks to deliver crosses into the box. RÉMY can hold up the ball to allow GUY CISSÉ to make runs in behind. They often play in combinations to exploit gaps in the opposition defense, either through quick one-twos or by hitting in behind on the transition.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press in coordinated waves. By having GIBERT push high, France can trigger a press that forces a long ball from the opponent. Another strength is the width provided by the full backs, which creates wide overloads when they overlap the midfielders. This allows France to spread wide and move the ball from side to side to find openings.
The 4-4-2 formation provides a reliable way to defend a lead or strike on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
