Starting Lineup

Celtic relies on a heavy verticality and high pressing game using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup seeks to overwhelm the opposition through direct attacking play and rapid transitions. By pushing many players into the final third, the team aims to pin the last defender and force mistakes high up the pitch.

Sinisalo sits between the posts to organize the back line during defensive transitions. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four featuring Johnston as the right back and KT at left back. Johnston and KT act as wide defenders who must track back when the team loses possession, while CCV and TRUSTY form the central pair. CCV operates as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, whereas TRUSTY provides physical presence to win the header and clear the lines.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a buffer for the defense. ENGELS and Calmac sit in the center to shield the back four and recycle possession when the attack stalls. ENGELS focuses on winning the second ball in the middle of the pitch, while Calmac works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must be disciplined to prevent being bypassed by the opposition, often dropping deep to cover the spaces left by the advancing full backs.

In the final third, Celtic uses four attackers to stretch the defence. Hassan and Duran occupy the wide areas as wingers, with Hassan staying wide to cross and Duran looking to cut inside to create goalscoring chances. Nygren and HOGH operate as a central partnership, with HOGH acting as a pressing centre forward to lead the hunt for the ball. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and use combinations to split the defence with a through ball.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. The heavy presence of four attackers also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for the opponent to play out from the back. This setup forces the opposition into a low block by occupying all vertical lanes.

Celtic uses this 4-2-4 to hunt for goals through high pressure and direct play. It is a high risk, high reward formation best suited for games where the team needs to break down a deep defending side through sheer offensive volume.
