Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Courtios · Luiz · Azpilicueta · Matic · Alonso · Cahill · Kante · Moses · Hazard · Costa · PedroChelsea relies on a high press and rapid transitions using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The goal is to disrupt the opposition build up and use quick vertical movements to attack.
In goal, Courtois provides a massive presence to sweep behind a high line. The back four consists of Azpilicueta at right back and Cahill at left back, acting as wide defenders to cover the flanks. Luiz and Matic form the central pairing, where Matic acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks while Luiz focuses on being dominant in the air. This defensive unit works together to maintain a compact shape and set the offside trap when the team pushes up.
The midfield is a five man unit designed to dominate the central areas. Kante plays as a single pivot, using his intense pressing to win it back high up the pitch and shield the defence. Pedro and Hazard operate in the half spaces as inverted eights, where Hazard can drive forward with the ball and Pedro looks to find the feet of the striker. Alonso plays as a wide midfielder to provide width on the left, while Moses acts as the right midfielder to help the full back. This group connects the defence to the attack by recycling possession or playing through the lines.
Chelsea employs a lone striker in Diego Costa, who acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Costa works to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines with the advancing midfielders. The width comes from Alonso and Moses, who allow Hazard and Pedro to cut inside and create overloads. When the team breaks quickly, the forwards look for runs in behind or to get to the byline for a cutback.
A major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to press in coordinated waves, especially with Kante triggering the press. The formation also offers great compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to find space in the middle. This setup allows the team to switch play rapidly to exploit isolated wide players in one on one situations.
This formation creates a hard team to break down through its intense central density and pressing. Chelsea is best suited for games against possession heavy sides where they can sit deep or press high to spring a counter at pace.
