Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Molina · Hermoso · Ndicka · Koulierakis · Castro · Dybala · Soulé · Malen · Cristante · Pellegrini · SvilarRoma relies on a high press and verticality to control games, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center of the pitch and use aggressive movement to break lines. By pushing many players into the middle and attacking thirds, the team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and exploit gaps in the opposition defense immediately.
Svilar starts between the posts to organize the defensive line. Roma operates with a narrow defensive block using a back two consisting of Ndicka and Hermoso. Ndicka acts as a dominant presence in the air, while Hermoso plays as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Because there are only two central defenders, they must stay compact and step up to set the offside trap, relying on the midfield to protect the space behind them.
The midfield is a massive engine room featuring a five man unit. Molina and Koulierakis act as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Molina providing stability while Koulierakis looks to carry the ball forward. Cristante and Pellegrini occupy the central roles, where Cristante works to win the second ball and Pellegrini acts as a connector to link the defensive unit to the attack. Dybala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, operating in the pockets to create chances and find the feet of the striker.
The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Castro acts as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opposition. Malen and Soulé operate as wide wingers, with Malen cutting inside from the left and Soulé looking to isolate defenders on the right. This setup allows the team to attack in combinations, using the movement of Dybala to draw defenders out of position and create runs in behind for the wingers.
One major advantage for Roma is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows them to control the tempo and recycle possession easily. The presence of five players in the middle makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. Another strength is the ability to transition quickly, as the proximity of the midfield to the front three allows for rapid attacks once the ball is recovered.
This formation is designed for heavy dominance and high intensity. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to pin the opponent back and control the game through central congestion.
