Starting Lineup

Mwene · Caci · Posch · Potulski · Sano · Martel · Nebel · Hollerbach · Bøving · Silas · Zentner

Mainz aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward quickly through a 2-5-3. This formation is built to play with intense verticality and overwhelming numbers in the middle of the park. By committing many players forward, the team seeks to overwhelm the opposition in their own half.

Zentner starts between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back line consists of a narrow duo of Potulski and Posch who act as the primary central defenders. They must hold the line and remain ready to cover huge amounts of space behind them due to the high line. Because there are only two players in the central defensive zone, Potulski and Posch must stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the middle.

The midfield is a massive engine designed to control the center and progress the ball. Caci and Mwene operate as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. In front of them, Martel and Sano act as two inverted eights who press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Nebel plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding pockets of space to play through the lines. This midfield unit connects the defensive zone to the front three by carrying the ball forward and finding the runners.

The attacking line uses three forwards to stretch the defence and pin the last defender. Hollerbach acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and engage the opposition centre-backs. Bøving and Silas operate as wide wingers who stay high to provide width. Bøving looks to cut inside to create goal scoring chances, while Silas looks to isolate a one on one wide. These three forwards press from the front to force a long ball and prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

Mainz offers significant advantages through numerical superiority in midfield and the ability to press in coordinated waves. The heavy presence of five midfielders allows the team to win the second ball and quickly transition into attack. The setup also makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines, as the midfield block is very dense.

This 2-5-3 formation relies on high energy and quick recovery to manage the large spaces left behind the defenders. It is best suited for games where Mainz can dominate the ball and suffocate the opponent in their own half.
