River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Acuña · Otamendi · M. Quarta · Montiel · Beltran · Moreno · Andrada · Arambarri · Almada · Correa · Beltran (Driussi / Freitas)River aims to play with high intensity and quick transitions using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup focuses on being defensively solid while staying capable of hitting opponents on the break. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition and create space for the attacking trio to move into central areas.
Beltran guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back line functions as a back five with Moreno and Otamendi acting as the central pillars. Otamendi uses his aerial strength and experience to command the area, while Moreno covers the space behind him. Acuña operates as an attacking wing back on the left to provide width, whereas Montiel plays as an attacking wing back on the right to overlap and send crosses into the box. This setup ensures the team stays compact when they drop into a low block.
In the middle of the pitch, River uses a three-man midfield to control the tempo and win the ball back. Arambarri acts as the pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes, while Andrada works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Almada plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to find pockets of space and play through the lines. This midfield group is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly switch play to the wide areas.
The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards to lead the line. Beltran plays as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line, while Correa acts as a second striker in the hole to link play. The formation creates runs in behind when the wing backs push up. When River wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition, using the movements of Almada to find the feet of the striker or to play a one-two in tight spaces.
One major advantage for River is the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs like Acuña and Montiel. This forces the opposition to defend deep and stretches the defence. Another strength is the numerical superiority in midfield when Almada joins the forward line, allowing the team to press in a mid-block or win the second ball effectively.
This formation provides a strong defensive foundation while remaining dangerous in transition. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with high defensive lines and heavy possession.
