Starting Lineup

Miranda · Holm · Heggem · Vitik · Dovbyk · Odgaard · Cambiaghi · Orsolini · Pobega · Ferguson · Skorupski

Bologna aims to control the game through aggressive high pressing and verticality with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team wants to drive forward quickly to stretch the defence and create chances in the final third.

Skorupski stays between the posts to manage the space behind the defenders. The defensive unit uses a back two consisting of Vitik and Heggem. Vitik acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks while Heggem focuses on winning the header and covering space. Because there are only two central defenders, the team must step up to set the offside trap and keep the distance between the lines small.

The midfield operates as a heavy engine room designed to dominate the centre of the pitch. Holm plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. Miranda acts as the left defensive midfielder to help recycle possession and cover the wide areas. Pobega and Ferguson occupy the central roles to drive forward with the ball and make late runs into the box. Odgaard plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the lines and find the feet of the forwards. This five man unit allows Bologna to compress the midfield and pin the opposition back.

In the attacking third, the team uses three forwards to pin the last defender. Dovbyk acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Cambiaghi plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create space for the midfield. Orsolini works on the right to provide width and whip it in from wide areas. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch. These players look to play one-two combinations to break the line and create clear shooting opportunities.

Bologna possesses great strength in their ability to press in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. The numerical superiority in the midfield helps them control the tempo and spread wide to stretch the opposition. By using the wide players to isolate defenders, the team creates many one on one situations in transition.

This formation is built for a high intensity game where winning the ball high is the priority. It is best suited for matches against opponents that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
