Derby Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Morris · Clark · Szmodics · Eames · Bilbija · CBT · Allen · Murkin · Sanderson · Langas · ZetterstromDerby focuses on aggressive verticality and high pressing using a 3-4-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition into attacking situations to catch the opposition out of position. By utilizing a wide attacking front, the team looks to stretch the defence and create chances through rapid movement.
Zetterstrom operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three where Sanderson acts as the central anchor to hold the line. Langas plays as the right centre back to cover the wide area, while Murkin operates on the left. This defensive trio must remain compact to prevent gaps between the lines, with Sanderson often stepping up to intercept passes or sweep behind his teammates.
A central midfield pairing of Eames and Bilbija works to control the middle of the park. Eames looks to carry the ball forward to link the defence and attack, while Bilbija provides more stability to shield the back three. On the flanks, Allen and CBT act as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width. Allen pushes high to support the left side, while CBT works to drive forward on the right to help the wingers. This midfield unit works to win the second ball and quickly recycle possession to the attackers.
The attacking front features three players tasked with pinning the last defender. Morris acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Szmodics plays as a left winger who prefers to cut inside to create goalscoring opportunities, while Clark operates on the right as an inverted winger. These three forwards press from the front to force the opposition into mistakes. The movement of Clark and Szmodics allows for constant runs in behind and creates space for Morris to operate in the box.
Derby offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press in coordinated waves. The combination of a three man defence and a four man midfield allows the team to stay compact when defending a lead. Furthermore, the wide positioning of Allen and CBT creates wide overloads that can isolate the opposition full backs in one on one situations. This setup makes the team very dangerous when they win the ball back in the final third.
This 3-4-3 formation relies on high intensity and quick transitions to overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to deal with pressure in their own half.
