J. Martinet plays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow back two made up of N. Otamendi and T. Ramírez. N. Otamendi uses his experience to lead the line and manage the offside trap while T. Ramírez provides cover. This small defensive group must be incredibly disciplined to prevent runners from getting behind them, as the rest of the team pushes far up the pitch to support the attack.

A heavy presence in the center of the pitch defines the midfield. River uses a layered midfield where G. Montiel and L. Vargas act as a double pivot to shield the defence.
