Starting Lineup

LASK relies on a high intensity, vertical style of play using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents by pushing numbers forward to attack quickly in transition. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and move the ball through the thirds with speed to catch the opposition defense out of position.

Jungwirth stays between the posts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a narrow two man back line consisting of Tornich and Andrade. Both defenders must be prepared to cover large amounts of space behind them as the team plays with a high line. Andrade and Tornich act as the primary blockers while being ready to step up and engage attackers before they turn. Because there are only two central defenders, they must remain compact to prevent being split by through balls.

The midfield engine operates as a central block consisting of a double pivot and two attacking midfielders. R. Ljubicic and Jørgensen form the double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the park. R. Ljubicic works to intercept passes and recycle possession, while Jørgensen looks to carry the ball forward to link the lines. Ahead of them, Horvath and Schöpf operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders. Horvath and Schöpf press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and create chances by playing through the lines.

In the attacking third, LASK utilizes a heavy front line with four players. Danek and Usor operate as two forwards in a partnership, looking to find the feet of each other or run in behind the defense. Harakate plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create space, while Lang occupies the right wing to stretch the defense. This front four is designed to pin the last defender and create constant pressure through combinations and quick vertical passes. The team aims to isolate wide players in one on one situations once the ball reaches the flanks.

LASK finds success through its ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The heavy presence in the attacking third creates numerical superiority in the final third, often leaving opposition defenders outnumbered. This formation also allows for a very fast speed of transition once R. Ljubicic or Jørgensen win possession in the middle.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system focused on constant offensive pressure. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a deep block or exploit an opponent that struggles to handle intense pressing.
