Preston aims to play a direct and aggressive brand of football using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the defence and hunt for goals by pushing many players into the final third. The lineup prioritizes verticality and quick transitions to catch the opposition out of position.

Daniel guards the goal as the last line of defence for Preston. The back line consists of a flat back four with Harry acting as the right back and Andrija occupying the left back role. In the middle, Odel and Lewis form the central pairing. Odel plays as a right centre back while Lewis covers the left side to hold the line. The unit must stay compact to avoid being split by long balls, with the defenders ready to step up to set the offside trap when the ball is played deep.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide some balance between the defence and the attack. Ali and Léo work together to protect the back four and recycle possession when the tempo needs to slow down. Ali and Léo must cover a large amount of ground to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle. They are responsible for picking up runners from deep and breaking the line with forward passes to find the front four. This duo connects the defensive unit to the high attacking line.

The attacking unit uses four players to pin the last defender and create constant pressure. Delano and Jusef act as wide wingers, with Delano hugging the touchline on the left and Jusef cutting inside from the right. In the center, Alfie and Milutin operate as a two forwards partnership. These two strikers look to find space between the centre backs and win the second ball when crosses come in. The front four press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. By having Delano and Jusef spread the width, they stretch the defence and open gaps in the middle. Preston can also use the speed of transition to hit in behind on the transition. The presence of four attackers makes it difficult for many teams to defend in a low block without being overwhelmed by numbers.

This 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk, high reward system designed for heavy attacking. It is best suited for games where Preston needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep.
