This group must stay narrow to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines.

The attacking threat is centered around a lone striker, Guirassy, who acts as a target man. Guirassy works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker to bring others into play. When Borussia Dortmund wins the ball, the wide players like Gaddou and Schlotterbeck push high to create width and provide service. The goal is to isolate a one on one wide or deliver early crosses for Guirassy to attack the near post. The team builds the attack through vertical passes to bypass the midfield quickly.

This formation offers significant compactness when defending to make it difficult for opponents to find gaps. Borussia Dortmund can also use the speed of transition to catch teams out of position.
