Offiah and Gibson act as the central pair to protect the middle. Gibson and Offiah must hold the line and win the second ball to stop direct attacks. Clarke and Vukcevic are tasked to track back quickly if the team loses the ball high up the pitch to prevent being caught out.

The midfield is a five man line designed to congest the center of the pitch. McCann and Leroy work as a double pivot to shield the defense and deny the turn to opposing playmakers. Devine plays as a central midfielder to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. Burgzog and Lang occupy the half spaces to provide more presence in the middle. Lang and Burgzog can press aggressively to win the ball high when the team transitions from a low block into a mid block.

Erabi leads the line as a lone striker tasked with holding up the ball to allow the midfield to move up. He must fight for long balls and find the feet of the striker to link up with the advancing runners. The attack relies on the wide midfielders to provide width and support Erabi. When Preston wins the ball back, the wingers look to carry the ball forward to create one on one situations or deliver early crosses into the box.

Preston offers great compactness when defending in a mid block. The formation creates numerical superiority in midfield which makes it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The team can also use the speed of transition to move from a deep defensive position to a goal scoring opportunity very quickly.
