Starting Lineup
Enzo Fernández (8) · Moisés Caicedo (25) · Morgan Rogers (17) · Maxence Lacroix (5) · Levi Colwill (6) · Reece James (24) · Julián Alvarez (9) · Cole Palmer (10) · Marc Cucurella (3) · Diogo Costa (1) · Murillo Santiago (22)Chelsea aims to dominate through a high press and rapid transitions in a 3-4-3. This formation is built to control the pitch by squeezing the space in the middle and using the wide areas to stretch the defence. The team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition before they can set their defensive lines.
Diogo Costa acts as the first point of attack, playing short from the back to start the build up. In front of him, a back three provides a solid base. Maxence Lacroix operates as the right centre back, while Murillo Santiago covers the left side. Levi Colwill plays as the central defender in this unit, acting as a ball playing defender to progress through the thirds. The back three stays compact to deny the turn of any oncoming attackers.
The midfield operates with a double pivot to control the center of the park. Enzo Fernández acts as the deep lying playmaker, looking to switch play and find the feet of the attackers. Beside him, Moisés Caicedo works to protect the back line and intercept passes. The wide players, Marc Cucurella and Reece James, act as attacking wing backs. They push high to provide width and overlap the wingers, while they must also track back to help the defenders when out of possession.
In the final third, Chelsea utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Julián Alvarez operates as a pressing centre forward, working to harass the opposition centre backs. Morgan Rogers plays on the left as an inverted winger who wants to cut inside, creating space for Marc Cucurella to move forward. On the right, Cole Palmer looks to find pockets of space and create chances. The front line works in combinations to break the line and find runs in behind.
One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create wide overloads. When Reece James and Cole Palmer move together, they force the opposition to double up, which often leaves space for Enzo Fernández to find an opening. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a mid block. The three centre backs and the double pivot make it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
This 3-4-3 formation focuses on high intensity and quick ball movement to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and can be punished on the transition.
