Next to him, Barrios works to win the second ball and recycle possession. Baena and Rayan operate as two central midfielders who connect the defensive and attacking lines. Baena likes to carry the ball forward to progress through the thirds, while Rayan helps to press in a mid block to win it back high up the pitch. This group ensures Atlético can transition from defense to attack through the middle.

In the final third, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership. Lookman/Osimhen plays as the lead striker, acting as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. Álvarez plays as the second striker in the hole, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The wingers and full backs work to stretch the defence, creating space for the forwards to combine in tight spaces. When the team breaks quickly, they look to exploit the channels with direct runs.

Atlético offers several tactical advantages with this lineup. The four man midfield allows for great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines.
