PSV Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kovar (Drommel/Olij) · Mauro Júnior (Filip Kostić) · Gasiorowski (Obispo) · Flamingo (Nagalo) · Dest (Sildillia) · Schouten (TBD) · Wanner (Sano) · Til (Mijnans) · van Bommel (Driouech/Perišić) · Man (Bajraktarevic) · Pepi (Pléa)PSV focuses on a vertical style of play to hit the opponent quickly, utilizing a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition by placing four players in the attacking third, looking to exploit space behind the defensive line. The goal is to play direct and stretch the opposition vertically, forcing them to defend deep and wide.
Kovar acts as the last line of defense, starting the build up from the back. The back four consists of Dest at right back and Mauro Júnior at left back, both of whom are expected to push high and provide width. In the center, Gasiorowski and Flamingo form the defensive pairing, focusing on holding a high line and covering the space behind the advancing full backs. This unit must be ready to step up and catch attackers offside or drop back to protect the goal if the high press is bypassed.
A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to provide some security for the back four. Schouten operates as a deep lying playmaker, looking to recycle possession and pick up runners from deep positions. Beside him, Wanner acts as a carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. These two must work hard to cover the gaps left by the attacking players and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.
The attacking unit is designed to pin the last defender and create constant threats. Pepi and Til lead the line as a two forward partnership, with Pepi working to find the feet of the striker and Til looking to run in behind. On the flanks, van Bommel and Man act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defense. This allows them to cut inside into the half spaces or deliver crosses into the box for the two central attackers.
One major strength of this PSV lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when Dest and Mauro Júnior overlap the wingers. The formation also creates a lot of pressure on the opposition back line, making it difficult for them to play out from the back without making mistakes. By keeping four players high, the team can quickly hit in behind on the transition to catch a mid block out of position.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for high intensity and direct attacking play. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high defensive line or struggle to handle quick transitions.
