Lyon relies on a high press and quick transitions, operating within a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the opponent half and win the ball back high up the pitch. The team looks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence before hitting in behind on the transition.

GRIEF acts as the last line of defence, while the back line functions as a narrow defensive block. TESSMANN sits in the middle of the three centre backs to anchor the unit. NIAKHATE operates as the left centre back, often providing cover for the wing back. R. KLUIVERT plays as the right centre back, looking to win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure. The wide defenders, ABNER as the left wing back and MAITLAND-NILES as the right wing back, are tasked to push high and provide the width. They must track back quickly to maintain a solid defensive line when the opposition has possession.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the park. TOLISSO (C) acts as the captain and the main conductor, looking to recycle possession and connect the defensive and attacking lines. He is known for his passing range and ability to control the tempo of the game. MORTON plays alongside him, tasked to press aggressively to win the ball and carry the ball forward. This duo must protect the space in front of the back three and ensure they do not get bypassed by direct play.

Lyon uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. OPENDA operates as a pressing centre forward, fighting for aerial strength and hold up the ball to bring others into play. On the wings, M. FOFANA and NUAMAH act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create numbers in the middle. This movement allows ABNER and MAITLAND-NILES to overlap the winger and deliver crosses into the box. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, keeping the play in the attacking third.

A major tactical strength of Lyon is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wing backs and inverted wingers. This forces the opposition to shift constantly, leaving gaps for NUAMAH or M. FOFANA to exploit. The team also possesses a high level of compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The speed of transition from a mid-block to a direct attack allows the team to catch opponents out of position.

This 5-2-3 formation is designed for a team that wants to dominate through aggressive pressing and rapid verticality. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play out from the back under intense pressure.
