Ahead of them, Haque, Matt, and Emilio form a three man midfield that connects the defensive and attacking lines. Emilio works to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker, while Haque and Matt look to carry the ball forward and arrive late into the box to support the attack.

The attacking movement relies on a lone striker. Derek acts as the pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and force long balls. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the play. Because the midfielders like Matt and Haque push up, Derek often finds himself isolated, so he relies on link up play between the lines to bring others into the game. The team looks to exploit the wings through the midfielders or use the central presence of Derek to break the line with quick passes.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending in a mid block.
