Newcastle focuses on a direct and vertical style of play using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the opposition to make a mistake before hitting them in behind. The goal is to remain compact and use the width of the pitch to stretch opponents while maintaining a strong central presence to win second balls.

Hornicek stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four with Thiaw and Botman acting as the central pair. Botman is dominant in the air and provides cover while Thiaw acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Livramento pushes up as an overlapping full back on the right to provide width, while Hall plays as an attacking wing back on the left to support the midfield.

A five man midfield provides the engine for Newcastle. Bamba and Ramsey form a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes in the center. Murphy and Barnes play as inverted eights, looking to drive forward with the ball and find space between the lines. Woltemade sits in the central pocket to connect the defensive and attacking lines, helping to recycle possession and move the ball from the deep midfield into the final third.

The attacking output relies on a lone striker, Osula, who acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. Osula must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. When the team wins the ball high up the pitch, the wingers or wide midfielders aim to isolate the opposition full backs in one on one situations. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage for Newcastle is the ability to compress the midfield and deny the opponent space to play through the center. The double pivot of Bamba and Ramsey makes it difficult for teams to find their playmaker. Additionally, the wide presence of Livramento and Hall creates wide overloads that can force the opposition to shift out of position.

This formation is built to maintain a compact block and strike on the transition. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where Newcastle can sit deep and counter at pace.
