Costa Rica National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
MARIN · DUARTE · OVIEDO · GONZALES · MARTINEZ · BORGES · RUIZ · RAMIREZ · CAMPBELL · WANCHOPE · NAVASCosta Rica looks to control the game through a compact defensive block and rapid transitions using a 5-3-2. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition on the break. The team focuses on winning the second ball and using the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the pitch when they win possession.
Keyne Navas sits between the posts to command the area and organize the back line. The defensive unit operates as a back five with Marin, Duarte, and Gonzales forming a narrow defensive block in the center. Marin acts as the central figure to clear the lines, while Duarte and Gonzales provide cover and are dominant in the air. Oviedo and Martinez act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and track back to defend against wide threats. This unit works to keep the space between the lines squeezed to prevent opponents from playing through the middle.
In the middle of the pitch, Costa Rica uses a three-man midfield to control the tempo. Borges sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and break up play. Beside him, Ruiz and Ramirez operate as the two central midfielders tasked to connect the defense and attack. Ruiz helps to recycle possession, while Ramirez looks to drive forward with the ball and arrive late into the box. The midfield unit works to press in a mid-block, forcing the opposition to play long balls that the defenders can win.
The attacking front line features two forwards working in close partnership. Wanchope leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front and disrupt the opposition build up. Campbell plays alongside him to find the feet of the striker and link up play between the lines. When the team transitions, the aim is to hit in behind on the transition, utilizing the runs of Wanchope and Campbell to exploit space. The wing backs, Oviedo and Martinez, overlap the winger to create overloads in the wide areas and deliver crosses into the box.
Costa Rica gains a significant advantage through the compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the central zones. The ability to use the wing backs to provide wide overloads creates constant threats during transitions. Furthermore, the presence of three strong central defenders allows the team to remain defensively solid while the midfield trio works to squeeze the space in front of them.
This 5-3-2 formation provides Costa Rica with a heavy defensive foundation and high potential for counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold a lot of possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
