Starting Lineup

Maatsen · Torres · Konsa · Cash · Watkins · J. Gomes · Manzambi · McGinn · Garnacho · Buendía · Martínez

Aston Villa looks to control games through a high press and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center of the pitch while using extreme width to stretch the opposition. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and use the aggression of the midfield to force mistakes before hitting the opponent in behind.

Emiliano Martínez acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very high defensive line. Torres and Konsa operate as a pair of central defenders who must be ready to sweep behind the high line when long balls are played. Because there are only two players in the back, Torres and Konsa must be dominant in the air and quick to cover the space left behind. They stay narrow to protect the middle while relying on the midfield to prevent direct passes to the strikers.

The midfield is a massive engine room consisting of a five man unit. Maatsen and Cash function as a double pivot to shield the defence and provide stability. McGinn and J. Gomes play as two central midfielders who connect the defensive and attacking lines, with McGinn known for his high work rate and tackling ability. Manzambi plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and win the second ball to keep the pressure on.

The attack utilizes three players across the front line to pin the last defender. Watkins acts as a pressing centre forward who leads the way from the front. On the flanks, Garnacho and Buendía play as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. Garnacho uses his direct dribbling style to beat defenders, while Buendía provides service from the wide areas. This combination of a central striker and two wide attackers creates many chances for runs in behind.

Aston Villa gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the central zone allows the team to control possession and recycle possession easily. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with Manzambi, McGinn, and Watkins all triggering the press from the front. This creates a situation where the opposition is squeezed in their own half and struggles to play out from the back.

This formation is designed for an aggressive, high risk style of play that aims to suffocate the opponent. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play under pressure or teams that sit deep and rely on slow build up.
