FC Porto Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Costa (Portugal/Ramos) · Moura(TBD) (Sanusi(TBD)) · Kiwior (Prpić(TBD)) · Pérez (Bednarek) · Costa (Fernandes) · Varela (Rosario) · TBD (Veiga) · Frohold (Hwang) · Pietuszewski (Sainz) · Gomes (Pepê) · Aghehowa (TBD(Gül, Silva))FC Porto prefers to play with a high press and direct verticality through a 4-3-3 formation. The lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and move through the thirds quickly to catch the opposition out of position. This formation works to stretch the defence by using wide attackers while maintaining enough numbers in the center to control the game.
Diogo Costa plays behind a flat back four to provide a strong foundation for the team. Pérez acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back while Kiwior covers the space behind the line. Costa operates as an attacking full back on the right to provide width, while Moura provides balance on the left. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and hold the line to prevent any direct runs in behind.
The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier and a single pivot. Varela sits in front of the defence to shield the back four and deny the pivot of the opposition. Frohold acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. The third midfielder provides support to help recycle possession and press in a mid-block when the team loses control.
FC Porto utilizes three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Aghehowa plays as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and find the feet of the striker when others move into space. Gomes and Pietuszewski act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central presence. These movements are designed to create runs in behind and allow the wide players to isolate a one on one wide.
A primary strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. The team can also create wide overloads by having the full backs overlap the winger. This provides FC Porto with a constant way to switch play and stretch the opposition.
This 4-3-3 formation is built to dominate through high intensity and quick transitions. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high defensive line or struggle to play out from the back.
