The goal is to use wide players to stretch the defence while the central players look to break the line quickly.

Hein guards the goal as the defensive unit sits in a mid-block or pushes up to a high line. The back three consists of Lynen, Friedl, and Pieper, who work together to defend zonally and cover the space behind the wing backs. Friedl provides aerial strength and physical presence in the middle of the defense. Agu and Deman act as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width and overlapping the wingers. When the team loses the ball, Agu and Deman must track back quickly to form a compact back five.

The midfield functions as a two-man engine room with Stage and Chuki. They operate as a double pivot that must be disciplined to avoid being bypassed. Chuki works to press aggressively to win the ball high, while Stage helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pair must be ready to intercept passes and immediately look to play through the lines to the front three. They also need to manage the space between the back three and the attackers to prevent the opponent from playing between the lines.

Werder Bremen uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Füllkrug acts as a target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and win the header. Mbangula and Njinmah play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the pitch. Mbangula can cut inside to create chances, while Njinmah looks to hit in behind on the transition. This front line is designed to press from the front, forcing the opponent to play long balls that the back three can clear.

One major tactical advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when Agu and Deman push high. This forces the opposition to defend deep and limits their ability to counter. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can squeeze the space in the center. The speed of transition allows the team to go direct and find the feet of the striker as soon as possession is regained.
