Borussia Dortmund looks to control territory through a high press and direct attacking play using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opponent in transition. The team aims to use the width of the field to stretch the defence while staying compact in a mid-block when the ball is lost.

Kobel sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit works as a flat back four where Gadou plays as the right back to provide width and Schlotterbeck operates as the left back. In the middle of the defence, Veerman and Anton act as the central pairing to defend the box and clear the lines. Anton is dominant in the air, while Veerman looks to play out from the back to start attacks. This unit holds a high line to keep the team compact and deny the turn to opposition attackers.

The midfield operates as a five man line to clog the passing lanes and protect the central zone. Nmecha and H. Fort occupy the central roles to shield the defence and win the second ball. Ryerson acts as a carrier in the left central midfield role to drive forward with the ball and progress through the thirds. Ahead of them, Karetsas and Konsatntelias play in the half spaces as attacking midfielders to press from the front and hunt for turnovers. This midfield group connects the defensive unit to the lone striker by recycling possession and quickly finding the wide players.

Guirasy acts as a lone striker to lead the line and hold up the ball for others. He works to pin the last defender and create space for Karetsas and Konsatntelias to arrive late into the box. The attack relies on the wide midfielders to cut inside and create numbers in the middle or hit in behind on the transition. When Borussia Dortmund wins the ball, the forwards immediately press the opposition back line to force a long ball. This movement creates opportunities for runs in behind and allows the team to exploit the spaces left by an advancing opponent.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force mistakes near the opponent goal. The five man midfield provides numerical superiority in the center, making it very difficult for teams to play through the lines. Additionally, the setup allows for quick transitions where the wide players can immediately spread wide to stretch the defence.

Borussia Dortmund relies on a heavy pressing style to dominate games and win the ball in dangerous areas. This formation is best suited for matches against teams that play with a high defensive line and struggle to handle intense pressure.
