Winterthur Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Beyer · Kapino · Golliard · Arnold · Burkart · Stillhart · Zuffi · Schneider · Mühl · Luthi · RohnerWinterthur aims to play a high press with a vertical style of play using a 4-3-3. This lineup relies on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opponent in transition. The team wants to move the ball forward quickly once possession is regained to stretch the opposition.
Kapino plays behind a flat back four. Stillhart acts as the right back to provide width while Luthi covers the left side. Mühl and Arnold form the central defensive pairing, where they focus on defending zonally and winning the second ball. They must hold the line and keep the defensive unit compact to prevent through balls from splitting the defence.
The midfield works in a three man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten behind the striker. Golliard operates as the attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space to play through the lines. Schneider and Zuffi occupy the central roles to shield the defence and connect the lines. They are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high and then quickly find the forwards. This midfield group must work to compress the midfield when the opposition has the ball.
Winterthur uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Beyer acts as the central striker, often looking to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates arriving late into the box. Rohner plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while Burkart stays wide on the left to spread the defence. The front three press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the opposition build up.
This formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. It also creates chances through wide overloads when Stillhart or Luthi overlap the winger. The team can quickly transition from a mid block to an attacking phase to catch opponents out of position.
Winterthur uses this 4-3-3 to dominate games through aggressive pressing and quick vertical movements. This lineup is best suited for facing teams that try to play out from the back under pressure.
