Brighton focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 4-5-1. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle and win the ball back high up the pitch. The team looks to stay compact and use the energy of the wide midfielders to disrupt the opposition build up.
Herrero sits between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four operates as a zonal line where Recio and Galilea act as the central pairing to defend the box. Puga and Rafita provide the width in the defensive unit, with Puga tasked to defend the flank and Rafita ready to push up when the team has the ball. The unit will drop into a low block when under heavy pressure to protect the goal.
The midfield uses a three man midfield with a carrier to link the play. Dani Lorenzo acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and break up play. Alongside him, Merino and Dotor work to compress the midfield and win the second ball. Joaquin and Larrubia play as two tens in the half spaces, looking to find pockets of space between the opposition lines. This group works to recycle possession and move the ball quickly from the defensive third into the final third.
Chupe plays as a lone striker and acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front. He works to pin the last defender and create space for the attacking midfielders. Joaquin and Larrubia often look to cut inside to support the central presence, while the wingers aim to stretch the defence. The goal is to create runs in behind or find Chupe to lay it off for late arrivals into the box.
Brighton gains a tactical advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This creates pressure on the opponent goalkeeper and forces a long ball which the central defenders can contest. Another strength is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central areas when Joaquin and Larrubia drift inside to join the midfield trio.
This 4-5-1 formation relies on high intensity to disrupt the rhythm of the match. It is best suited for games against teams that prefer to build play slowly from the back.
