This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly progress through the thirds to catch the opposition before they can settle. The goal is to stretch the defence and create constant pressure in the final third.
Unai acts as the last line of defence, starting the buildup play from the back. The back four stays relatively high to compress the space, with Jesús playing as a right back to provide width and Yuri operating as an attacking left back. Dani and Aymeric form the central pairing, with Aymeric often tasked to cover the space behind the advancing full backs while Dani focuses on winning the second ball and intercepting passes. The defensive unit stays compact to deny the turn to opposing attackers.
The midfield functions as a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative tip. Mikel works to shield the defence and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Beñat connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball from the centre-backs and playing through the lines. Oihan plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box to catch the defence off guard. This trio allows Athletic to control the tempo and recycle possession effectively.
Athletic uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Gorka acts as the pressing centre-forward, holding up the ball and working to win headers to lay it off for his teammates. Nico and Iñaki operate as inverted wingers who cut inside, which creates space for Yuri and Jesús to overlap the winger. This setup allows the team to attack in combinations, often looking to hit in behind on the transition or deliver early crosses to the far post. The front three also work in pairs to press from the front and force a long ball.
The formation provides significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using inverted wingers, the team creates wide overloads when the full backs push up, often isolating wide players in one on one situations. The presence of Oihan allows for numerical superiority in the half-spaces, making it difficult for opponents to track runners between the lines.
Athletic relies on intense pressure and quick transitions to break down opponents. This 4-3-3 is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back or leave space behind their defensive line.
