Starting Lineup

Calafiori · Timber · G. Magalhães · Saliba · Gyökeres · Havertz · Ødegaard · Tzolis · Rice · B. Guimarães · Raya

Arsenal focuses on high pressing and controlling the game through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the pitch by squeezing the space in the opposition half and using extreme verticality to catch teams out of position. The goal is to win it back high up the pitch and immediately look to break the lines to reach the goal.

Raya acts as the last line of defense, often playing out from the back to start the build up. The defensive unit relies on a narrow two man center back pairing consisting of G. Magalhães and Saliba. Saliba provides great recovery pace and strength while G. Magalhães is dominant in the air and strong in duels. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold a high line and work closely together to cover the width of the pitch and prevent runners from getting behind.

The midfield is the engine of this Arsenal system, functioning as a heavy five man block. Calafiori and Timber operate as deep pivots who help to shield the defense and provide balance. Rice works in the left central role to press aggressively and carry the ball forward, while B. Guimarães provides energy in the right central spot to win the second ball. Havertz plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space between the lines and arrive late into the box to add goals.

In the attacking third, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defense. Tzolis plays as a wide winger on the left to provide width, while Ødegaard operates from the right side to create chances and play through the lines. Gyökeres acts as a physical presence as a lone striker, capable of holding up the ball to bring others into play. These forwards press the opposition back line constantly, forcing errors and creating opportunities for quick transitions or cutbacks from the wings.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch, making it very difficult for opponents to keep possession. Arsenal can also use the wide presence of the midfielders to create overloads, which allows the wingers to isolate defenders in one on one situations. The coordination between the five midfielders and three attackers allows the team to compress the midfield and squeeze the opposition effectively.

The 2-5-3 formation is built for high intensity and dominating territory through aggressive pressing. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to pin the opponent into their own half and control every zone of the field.
