PSG aims to control the tempo and dictate play through a high press and verticality with a 3-5-2. This formation is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and use superior technical quality to break lines. By maintaining a high line, PSG can squeeze the space and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position.

G. Buffon guards the goal while the defensive unit sits in a narrow defensive block. F. Baresi (C) acts as the ball playing leader in the middle of the back three, organizing the line and reading the game. Beside him, A. Nesta provides defensive coverage as the right center back, while P. Maldini covers the left side. The trio is capable of playing out from the back to start attacks. The unit stays compact to deny the turn to any oncoming attackers.

The midfield functions as a powerhouse using a three man midfield with a carrier and attacking presence. L. Matthäus and F. Rijkaard form a double pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. L. Matthäus provides immense work rate to press aggressively and carry the ball forward. R. Carlos and Cafu operate as attacking wing backs who spread wide to provide width, often overlapping to create extra passing lanes. D. Maradona plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, operating in the half spaces to create through balls and link the midfield to the front line.

PSG uses two forwards in a partnership to terrorize the opposition back line. Ronaldo operates as a pressing centre forward, looking to hit in behind on the transition and exploit gaps. M. van Basten plays as a second striker who can hold up the ball and find the feet of his partner. These two combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position. The movement of R. Carlos and Cafu allows the forwards to isolate a one on one wide when they receive the ball in advanced areas.

This lineup offers great strength through numerical superiority in midfield. The ability of R. Carlos and Cafu to push high creates wide overloads that force the opponent to shift constantly. PSG can also transition with immense speed because the midfield engine can bypass the midfield quickly once the ball is recovered.

This 3-5-2 formation relies on technical dominance and intense pressure to control the game. It is best suited for matches against teams that try to play out from the back and leave space behind their midfield.
