PSG focuses on aggressive verticality and controlling the center of the pitch through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to dominate the ball by pushing many players forward to squeeze the space in the opponent half. It is a formation built to overwhelm the opposition through heavy central presence and rapid ball movement to catch the defense out of position.

Trapp sits between the posts to act as the last line of defense. The defensive unit uses a very high line consisting of only two central defenders, Marquinhos and Thiago Silva ©, who must be ready to cover large amounts of space. Marquinhos provides pace and recovery ability while Thiago Silva © uses his reading of the game to intercept passes. Because there are no full backs, these two central defenders must be capable of playing out from the back and stepping up to stop attacks before they reach the box.

The midfield functions as a massive block to control the tempo. Kurzawa and Meunier act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. Rabiot plays as the central engine to carry the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. Verratti operates in the left half space to create from deep and pick up runners, while Matuidi works on the right to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. This five man midfield ensures PSG can dominate the center and win the second ball frequently.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back line. Cavani acts as the main striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Draxler plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances, while Lucas stays wider on the right to stretch the defense. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This setup creates many runs in behind and allows for quick combinations between the attackers and the attacking midfielders.

A major advantage for PSG is the numerical superiority in midfield which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows the team to win it back high up the pitch and attack quickly. Another strength is the capacity to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the wingers receive the ball in space.

This formation relies on intense pressing and a high line to dictate the game. It is best suited for matches where PSG needs to break down a low block through sheer volume of players in the final third.
