Taffarel sits between the posts as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, the defensive unit relies on a narrow pairing of Popescu and Nesta. Nesta is known for his reading of the game and tackling ability, while Popescu provides strength to win the header and clear the lines. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold the line and be ready to step up to set the offside trap, often leaving themselves vulnerable if the opponent hits in behind on the transition.

The midfield is the engine room of this formation, utilizing a five man unit to dominate the center. Alex plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines. Vieria and Appiah act as the left and right central midfielders, tasked to press aggressively and win the second ball. Capone acts as a deep lying playmaker in a double pivot alongside Roberto Carlos, who provides immense width and power from a left defensive midfield role. Roberto Carlos will often carry the ball forward to stretch the defence, while Capone stays back to deny the pivot of the opposition.

Drogba acts as a physical target man who can hold up the ball and win the header, providing a focal point for the team. Hagi operates as an inverted winger on the right, looking to cut inside and deliver early crosses or shots. Weah plays on the left as a wide winger who stays wide to pull the opposition defense apart. These three work in combinations to create runs in behind or isolate a one on one wide.
