Loris Karius stays between the posts to command the area and sweep behind the defensive line. The width is provided by attacking wing backs, as Timo Becker pushes high on the right and Robin Gosens makes runs on the left to support the play. In the middle of the pitch, the team uses a double pivot to control the central zone. Adil Aouchiche and Dejan Ljubicic work together to shield the defence and win the second ball. Moussa Sylla and Junior Adamu operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the defence. These attackers are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. When Schalke 04 wins the ball back, the wingers often cut inside to create space for the wing backs to overlap the winger, creating constant movement and runs in behind the opposition defence.

Schalke 04 gains a clear advantage through the wide overloads created by the wing backs and wingers working together. The formation also offers great compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to find space between the lines. By having a strong central presence in Edin Dzeko, the team can also bypass the midfield with direct balls when they need to break quickly.
