Newell's seeks to control games through a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to dominate the pitch by squeezing the space and using wide areas to stretch the opposition. The team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and move the ball forward with speed to catch the opponent out of position.

USTARI acts as the last line of defense behind a back five. The defensive unit functions with a central trio of MATEO, LOPEZ, and MAMMANA. MATEO holds the line in the middle, while LOPEZ and MAMMANA provide cover and strength in the air. To provide width, DIAZ and VILLALGRA operate as attacking wing backs. DIAZ pushes high to overlap the winger, while VILLALGRA covers the left flank and can carry the ball forward to join the attack.

The midfield uses a double pivot consisting of TONSO and FIGUEROA. These two players work to compress the midfield and protect the back line. TONSO is tasked to shield the defense and intercept passes, while FIGUEROA works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must work hard to win the second ball and ensure the team stays compact when the opposition tries to play through the middle.

Newell's employs three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. TEVEZ plays as a pressing centre-forward, using his experience to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. He is supported by NEIRA and VILLALBA, who act as inverted wingers. NEIRA and VILLALBA cut inside to create central presence and look to arrive late into the box. This creates constant movement, allowing for runs in behind or cutbacks from the byline when the wing backs push high.

A major advantage for Newell's is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping runs of DIAZ and VILLALGRA. This setup also allows for a coordinated press in the attacking third, as the front three and the wing backs can squeeze the opponent. The formation offers great flexibility to shift into a more defensive block when needed, making it difficult for opponents to find space in the half-spaces.

The 5-2-3 formation focuses on high intensity and verticality to break down organized units. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to exploit wide areas and catch a high defensive line on the transition.
