Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SPENCE (Diouf) · Dimarco (Henrique) · Calhanoglu (STANKOVIC) · Sucic (JONES) · Barella (Zielinski/Mkhy) · Lautaro (Bonny) · Thuram (Pio Esposito) · AKANJI (STONES) · Bisseck (Pavard) · Bastoni (Augusto) · Martinez (PROVEDEL/Di Gennaro)Inter focuses on a direct and aggressive style of play through a 3-5-2 formation. The team relies on heavy pressing and quick transitions to overwhelm the opposition in their own half. This lineup is designed to control the central areas of the pitch while using wing play to stretch the opposition defense.
Martinez operates between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back three consists of AKANJI, Bisseck, and Bastoni who defend in a narrow defensive block. AKANJI uses his recovery speed and strength to cover the central space, while Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. Bisseck provides stability on the right side of the central trio. This unit works to squeeze the space and win the second ball when the team presses high.
A central three man midfield provides the engine for Inter. Calhanoglu sits in the single pivot role to shield the defense and recycle possession. He uses his wide passing range to switch play and find the attackers. Barella drives forward with the ball to connect the lines, while Sucic provides support in the central area. Dimarco pushes high as a left wing back to offer width, and SPENCE operates on the right to provide similar support. This midfield group works to win it back high up the pitch and control the tempo.
The attacking unit utilizes two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender. Lautaro and Thuram work in close combinations to break the line. Lautaro often drops into the hole to link play, while Thuram uses his power to run in behind and receive through balls. The team builds attacks through the half spaces, often using Dimarco to whip it in from wide areas. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
Inter possesses significant tactical advantages including numerical superiority in the midfield. The presence of Dimarco and SPENCE allows for wide overloads from the wing backs, which can isolate wide players in one on one situations. The compactness when defending makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. This formation also allows for great speed of transition once the ball is won back in the middle third.
The 3-5-2 formation provides a balance of central control and wide attacking threat. Inter is best suited for games where they can dominate the ball and exploit spaces behind the opposition full backs.
