R. Dasayev · K. Förster · D. Passarella (C) · E. Gerets · A. Cabrini · G. Souness · A. Giresse · J. Tigana · M. Platini · A. Altobelli · K. Rummenigge

River focuses on a strong defensive foundation and quick transitions through a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a compact mid-block and hit opponents on the break. The team looks to absorb pressure before using the technical quality of the central players to move the ball forward rapidly.

R. Dasayev guards the goal while the back five maintains a narrow defensive block to protect the middle. D. Passarella (C) leads the line as a ball playing defender with great reading of the game. He is joined by G. Souness and K. Förster to form a central trio. G. Souness provides aerial strength and stability in the middle of the defense. On the flanks, E. Gerets and A. Cabrini act as attacking wing backs. They push high to provide width but must track back to cover the wide areas when the team loses the ball.

The midfield works as a three man midfield with a carrier and a creative tip. J. Tigana and A. Giresse play as two central midfielders who press aggressively to win the ball high. J. Tigana is known for his high work rate and ability to cover large areas of the pitch. M. Platini operates as an attacking ten behind the strikers, acting as the primary playmaker. He looks to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the forwards. This midfield unit connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding the runners.

River uses a front two in a partnership to stretch the opposition. A. Altobelli and K. Rummenigge act as two mobile forwards who look to run in behind the defensive line. K. Rummenigge uses his pace and power to pin the last defender while A. Altobelli works to link up play between the lines. When attacking, the wing backs E. Gerets and A. Cabrini overlap the wide players to create overloads. This movement allows the team to switch play quickly and find space in the channels.

This formation offers great compactness when defending a lead. The wide overloads from the wing backs create many chances in transition. River can also use the mobility of the front two to press the opposition back line.

This 5-3-2 formation is built for teams that want to be hard to beat and strike with speed. It is best suited for games against possession heavy sides where the team can sit deep and counter at pace.
