Lyon focuses on heavy counter attacking transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents with speed on the break. The team looks to soak up opposition attacks and then strike quickly when space opens up in the final third.

GRIEF starts in goal to command the area. The defensive unit operates as a back five with Morton acting as the central figure to anchor the line. R. Kluivert operates as a right centre back and is tasked to cover the space behind the wing back, while Niakhate sits at left centre back to defend the zone. Abner functions as an attacking wing back on the left to provide width, whereas Maitland-Niles acts as a defensive wing back on the right to maintain a compact defensive block. The back five works together to hold the line and deny space between the lines.

The midfield consists of a two man central pairing that must work hard to protect the back five. Tolisso (C), acting as captain, sits in the left central midfield role to connect the defence and attack while using his passing range to find the forwards. Tessmann operates in the right central midfield position to shield the defence and win the second ball. These two players are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team stays compact when the opposition tries to play through the middle.

Lyon uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Openda acts as a lone striker and focuses on runs in behind the opposition back line. Nuamah plays as a right winger and looks to cut inside to create chances, while M. Fofana operates on the left wing to provide width and whip it in from deep positions. The front three work to press the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the defenders to win the ball back and start the transition.

This formation provides great strength in terms of defensive compactness and allows Lyon to defend in a narrow block. The wide areas are protected by the wing backs, which helps the team win the second ball during transitions. By using the wing backs to push up, the team creates wide overloads that can catch the opposition out of position.

The 5-2-3 formation makes Lyon very difficult to break down through the middle. This setup is best suited for games against dominant teams that leave large spaces behind their defensive line.
