A heavy focus on defensive stability and quick transitions defines this lineup in a 5-2-3. The team aims to sit deep to deny space behind the back line and then break quickly once the ball is won. This formation is built to absorb pressure from dominant sides before hitting them on the break using wide outlets.

The goalkeeper 1 acts as the last line of defense behind a narrow defensive block of five. A back three consisting of 3, 6, and 2 forms the core of the defense. Player 6 operates as the central defender to sweep behind the line, while 3 and 2 provide cover and strength in the air. The attacking wing backs 4 and 5 are tasked with providing width, often pushing up to support the attack while tracking back to ensure the team maintains a compact shape when out of possession.

In the middle of the pitch, the team utilizes a double pivot. Players 8 and 10 sit in front of the defensive line to shield the back three and win the second ball. Player 8 works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while 10 focuses on pressing aggressively to win the ball high or intercept passes before they reach the opposition. This pairing must stay close together to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

The attacking unit uses three attackers across the front to stretch the opposition defense. Player 9 acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of others. On the flanks, 7 and 11 operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to create space in the middle. These attackers press the opposition back line from the front, looking to trigger a press or exploit space for runs in behind during a rapid transition.

One major advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when 4 and 5 overlap the wingers. The team also gains defensive security through the compactness when defending in a low block, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps. This setup allows the team to transition from a defensive stance to an attacking one with great speed by using the width provided by the wing backs.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on a solid defensive base and rapid wide attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
