Starting Lineup

Evan · EJ · Julian · Russel · Theo · Lance · Tony · Alex · Oliver · Abu · Justin

Vancouver focuses on a compact defensive lineup to frustrate opponents through a 4-5-1 formation. The team looks to play a counter attacking style that relies on closing down space. This formation is built to deny passing lanes and force the opposition into wide areas where they are less dangerous.

Evan acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back four stays relatively deep with EJ and Theo playing as full backs on each side. EJ and Theo must track back to help the midfield and prevent crosses. In the center, Russel and Julian act as the main central defenders to defend zonally and win the header. They work to keep the line high enough to squeeze the space but must be ready to drop into a low block if the pressure increases.

A midfield of five players provides the core of the Vancouver style. Lance plays as the single pivot to shield the defense and protect the center. Tony and Alex act as the two central midfielders to drive forward and link play. Alex focuses on finding the feet of the striker, while Tony can arrive late into the box to create a threat. Abu and Justin operate as wide midfielders who must provide width and help defend the flanks. They help to compress the midfield when the team loses possession.

The attack is built around the lone striker, Oliver, who acts as a target man. Oliver must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up. Since there are no other strikers, Abu and Justin must spread wide to stretch the defence. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition by using the speed of the wide players. They look to get to the byline and deliver a cross to Oliver.

This formation provides numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having Lance, Tony, and Alex in the center, Vancouver can control the tempo and recycle possession. Another strength is the ability to press in a mid block. The five midfielders can move together to trigger a press and win the ball back high up the pitch.

The 4-5-1 formation is a reliable way to maintain defensive solidity. It is best suited for playing against dominant teams that rely on heavy possession.
